My work does not have an IT department, and I am going to fix that

Initially I wanted to write this blog post to just scream at the void, but while I was writing it, I figured out a specific topic, so here we are.

I'm getting ready to finally form an IT department at my charity fund. Right now I am the only IT guy in here and thus we don't have an IT department, I am technically a part of financial department. So as an initial step of forming an IT department I've started to intern my friend using my current big project, and if we both will like us working together, then I'll secure a job for her, I've already agreed on this with my boss. While interning I also practice collaborating on code, because I've always coded exclusively myself, and I am also practicing my leadership skills. I think we both are doing very good, and while working together, I started to like GitHub because of how many features it has. I must note that our fund has access to a free GitHub Team

At the end of the past week and also today, I filled a spreadsheet named “Expenses for IT department”. I made a list of server and networking stuff I would like to have, such as: * New router in place of the current main router in our office * Some more routers either for expanding the network reach or to install them to different offices * Ethernet cables * Kit of tools for everything that is networking * Battery pack for UPS * Server rack I also budgeted some current and future expenses like Azure VM and new software which we plan to replace our current Google Sheets scripts with (😭). In case with Azure we must fit in $2000 yearly grant by Microsoft, and according to forecast for the reminder of the year by Azure we will spend more than the grant. Fortunally we can fix that by downsizing our VM, since according to Azure's monitoring, current VMs resources are almost never fully utilized. Some time ago the grant was $3600...

The hardest part of forming an IT department will be writing policies and instructions. I'm a simple man, I don't like bureaucracy, almost never had to deal with it, let alone create it myself, so I have no idea how to write them. I hope that my experience with interning my friend will push me into a right direction.

I really hope that everything will go alright. I'm kinda of nervous, but curiosity and opportunities take lead.
